Southern African Anglican Church adopts friendlier disposition towards Gay couples

Posted on August 24th, 2009 by Richard Catto 1,878 views

I was pleased tonight to read this article -  IOL – Church makes key decision on gay couples – the link and excerpt of which were sent to me by my Google Alert on the keyword “Cape Town”.

I have been a member of the Anglican Church since I was a child and recently (since 2007) began re-attending the Anglican Church of my youth. As a gay friendly person and a Christian, I am very pleased to see that the Anglican Church met in Synod this past weekend and decided to adopt a resolution to accept and care for all gay couples in committed relationships in their parishes. Clergy of  St George Street Cathedral parish proposed the resolution saying that their parish has come to be seen by gay couples as a “safe place” for them.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba sees the resolution as an important first step towards the Southern Anglican Church ministering to its gay members.

Next Generation Email – Google Wave

Posted on June 2nd, 2009 by Richard Catto 2,318 views

One of the hottest and most exciting new software products previewed just last week on May 29, is Google Wave, which is Google’s answer to the question, “What would email look like, if it were developed from scratch using today’s technologies?”

The same team that developed Google maps brings us Google Wave, the next generation of email which combines modern communications technologies such as email, instant messaging, document collaboration, and  social networking into one online server hosted object called a Wave.

So where did they get the word ‘wave’ from? It turns out that one of the lead developers, Lars Rasmussen, is an avid fan of the Firefly TV series that called video messages waves.

Google Wave is meant to replace the way you use email and make you millions of times more productive than you are now. The project is being open sourced by Google because it wants this technology to replace email as we currently know it. Google Wave is cutting edge technology built from the ground up using the latest software technology. It is HTML 5 based, and supports drag and drop into web pages, so that getting images and video into a Wave, is simply a matter of dragging the content you want into the Wave.

Currently the product is still in developer preview phase which means that it is not yet available to use, but Google has said it will be made available later this year.

If you watch the hour and 20 minute long video, hosted on youtube, you will be utterly amazed at some of the technology previewed such as spell checking which understands grammatical context and on the fly translation into a foreign language as you type. In my opinion, Google Wave represents a quantum leap forward in online communications technology. Web sites such as ReadWriteWeb and Information Week are hailing this as the next killer app.

If this technology proves to be the winner it looks to be, products such as Microsoft Outlook could be rewritten to work with Waves rather than traditional email.

Representations sent to the owners of The Pirate Bay by Music and Entertainment Industry copyright infringement investigators such as Web Sheriff were routinely subjected to public ridicule and scorn on the blog pages of The Pirate Bay web site, but now it seems that the last laugh is being had by the Music and Entertainment Industry.

The founders of The Pirate Bay, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi and Carl Lundstroem have been sentenced to one year in prison and fines amounting to 30 million kronor (US$3.6 million).

Given a choice between the dolled up llama and Bobby, I’ll take the Dolly

Who wants Robert Mugabe to be allowed entry into South Africa? Not me!

Unless it is to arrest him and throw him into a deep pit for the rest of his stinking life.

Yet, our government entertains Mugabe, a vicious blood thirsty murdering tyrant, as a friend, and denies entry to the Dalai Lama, a man of peace.

I hope this hurts you in the election, ANC. But I wonder if it matters to many South African voters?

At least Gatsha is doing something about it. I hope the court orders that a visa be issued.
