Susan Shabangu is my new hero

Yes, it’s true. I’ve been thinking about what she said and about the various reactions to her, and right now I’m falling on the side of supporting her.
Here, for the first time, in the flesh is an ANC politician who is tough on crime. I think many South Africans had given up on ever experiencing this day, but it has come.
Probably the most controversial thing she said was her urging of policemen to ignore the Constitution of South Africa and just kill the bastards (referring to criminals).
"One-shot one-kill" Shabangu has told the police that they should not worry about firing warning shots anymore.
"Just kill the bastards."
Dammit, you just gotta love the whole concept. Killing criminals is yummy stuff.
But you know, I think we can go even one better than that. We can totally and utterly destroy criminals and dirty deal them all the way down the line. We don’t need to stick to our agreements with them. We can set them up, get them to dance to our tune and then kill them anyway. Just for kicks. Just because we’re pissed. Just because they deserve to die.
Take this article for instance. A gang of thugs attacked a man and his daughter, robbing them and gang-raping the woman. Now one of the young punks, a minor has pleaded guilty, turned state’s witness and is now offering testimony against the rest of his thugs for a reduced sentence. He confesses that he was the first to rape the woman.
Old enough to rape, old enough to die, in my opinion. Sure, tell him he’s got a deal, let him sing, get the convictions on the rest of the thugs and then snuff him anyway. Screw his deal. Screw honouring our word to a criminal thug rapist. Just snuff his ass when we’re done with him. We have no shortage of punk rapists and if we snuff out a couple of thousand maybe the rest of them will think very hard before pulling out their puny penises.
And if not, well we won’t have to think hard before wiping them out. It will have become an automatic reaction by then. See a rapist, shoot a rapist. No arrests. No paperwork. Just one clean kill. And the thanks of your community.
And as for the Constitution and the legality of all this? Like Susan Shabangu says, we ought not to worry about this because that’s her department. She’ll look after all the rules and regulations. The ANC has something like a 73% majority in Parliament which means they can amend the Constitution without obtaining any other political party’s agreement.
I think it could work.

April 24th, 2008 at 11:52I’m left confused. I have no idea what you’re motives or opinion are on this matter. Sure we need to be tough on crime, but at the expense of the constitution? No thank you.

April 24th, 2008 at 12:06Susan Shabangu’s tough on crime speech was wild.
It was the rantings of an unbridled fool. She’s clueless. She doesn’t have the first idea how to solve the problem of rampant crime so in exasperation she calls on police to just kill criminals, which is so off the wall absurd, she probably wins some kind of “dumb animal of the month” prize.
Crime is not solved by ranting rhetoric and a call to arms. Crime is solved by having a coherent strategy and the resources to implement it.

April 24th, 2008 at 17:25Richard, thanks for bringing this topic to my attention and for encouraging me to write on it (I have already begun, expect my posting to Candy’s blog as soon as permissable).
This is always a tough topic for me. As a Quaker, I am not allowed to take a human life or to participate in the taking of human life (I am automatically exempted from having to testify in any trial which may result in a death penalty). As a human, a man, who cares about his friends, family and loved ones…and having had friends harmed by recidivist criminals, my blood boils.
Even here in the US, we face the battle between Constitution and religious frames and the expediency of the death penalty. There are people in this world whose harm at the hands of criminals would bring out the worst side of my nature, and I grapple with that aspect and those fears when confronting this issue.
I will think, very hard, upon this before I present my full response.

April 24th, 2008 at 18:45William, it is true that human beings are brutal creatures. At heart, when confronted with criminals, most of us just want to rip their hearts out with no further ceremony.
This was certainly the brutal way societies lived in Ancient times. Rome, for instance, would sentence a man to death by the arena where he would be chopped into pieces by gladiators. People were free to butcher their slaves at their whim.
The people, to this day, continue to bay for blood whenever they feel wronged. The masses remain untamed but are restrained by new societal values introduced to the world via Christianity.
The reason why Western civilisation is no longer the brutal society that Romans experienced and no longer tolerates human slavery is as a direct result of the strong influence of Christianity on societal morals.
As much as many people enjoy railing against Christianity, they need to realise that if Christianity were to vanish, modern society would very quickly revert to the brutal way of living previously experienced. Human slavery would recommence.
Jesus Christ left deep footprints on this Earth, and we ought to be grateful for that.

April 25th, 2008 at 14:26No argument there, Rich.
It disturbs me when someone in a position to uphold a coda (like a Constitution) tells people to throw it out. I thought that was treason, or at least hypocrisy. I understand the anger and fear and hatred that drives such thoughts, and I pray I never have to confront these things again in my own life.
But, in all honesty, I pray I can live up to my principles if such a time does come, for I am only human.
It is said a Conservative is a Liberal who has been mugged.

Hope you are well.

April 28th, 2008 at 09:32The criminal procedure act have got very impressive guidelines as to how cops should go about their duties i.e it stipulates that cops should have independent social workers at each and every police station and prostitutes and street kids must be passed over to social workers who must try all in their powers to re-unite them with their families since there`s no-one who doesn`t have a family.
They must investigate conditions at their homes and if there`s a social crisis they must address it.
I have been a victim of trigger-happy and racist cops in the past and i cannot allow a situation where cops are the law unto themselves. The criminal procedure act makes it clear that cops who shoot civilians must go tell the courts that they were justified and not the media.

May 5th, 2008 at 15:15One cop talked about how they are so frustrated by this government that they while away time by arresting people under false premises and then beat the hell out of them to abstract confession or go-out to go collect bribes and the other talks about how bribes amounting to between two-to-thousand a day enabled him to buy a 15-million rand house with a 5-million rand bond…

June 4th, 2008 at 16:08According to SAPA-in the past two years less than 50% of all SA Police Service members charged with serious offences have been dismissed;of those 28% were charged with murder,27%for rape,24%percent for corruption and 34%for corruption.
Be very afraid of the cops in South Africa. It doesn`t matter who you are at the time of arrestÂ…when they have decided to beat you up they will do so and they will do so to make you asthmatic and so that you must die soon after that or derange you.Your crime could have been as minor as requesting their identificatin or protesting their disregard for your human rights.
What`s disturbing its the fact that President Bush stated recently that he has been training our cops for the last ten years but there`s no shred of evidence to prove this since our cops are illiterate and don`t know anything about their ethics and codes and oaths and still use violence to abstract evidence from suspects.
In South Africa you re likely to be robbed by cops and security guards than criminals and if you are injured or killed by cops your best bet is to sue since pursuing that cop will be futile since he will be shielded by the politicians.
In a country where the President is in self-denial that national security is his core function by his disinterest in defending and protecting national security `what good can you expect.Anybody who tells you differently about South Africa is a liar and misinformer
